Background IFN-γ is a key cytokine produced by activated T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. It belongs to the Type II cytokine family, a secreted glycoprotein, and IFN-γ plays an important role in host defense mechanisms, especially in fighting bacterial, parasitic, viral, and fungal infections. In addition, IFN-γ is involved in regulating other aspects of the immune system, such as promoting the differentiation of Th1 cells and inhibiting the activity of Th2 cells, as well as regulating the activation and cytotoxicity of immune cells. In the nervous system, IFN-γ can affect the function of microglia, including promoting their activation and altering their phenotype. For example, IFN-γ can induce morphological changes in microglia, increase the production of inflammatory factors, and affect neuroprotective and neurotoxic processes. In addition, IFN-γ can affect cognitive function and amyloid-β (Aβ) clearance in mice model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by regulating the autophagy pathway.
